Yeah, right.
Why that isn't default[1] I don't know; it's normally true when I'm
using tools like route, netstat, and ipchains that my network is hosed
in one way or another, and I bet 50% or the time (or more) I either
don't have access to DNS or would rather have the numerical IPs anyway.
Not to mention being noticably faster if you're on a slow line.

[1] On Linux, where a large majority of users experience most of
their configuration probelms with dialups. Obviously it makes sense
to default to IP lookup in more stable Ethernet environments with a
local NS.
