Dear Friends,
We've just got word that Mark Barnsley has been put in Segregation at
HMP
Frankland, along with 2 other prisoners. We don't have the exact
details
yet but have managed to find out from the prison that Mark was
segregated
because, according to the prison, he was 'fermenting dissent'. We all
know
that Mark is in prison because he was the victim of a miscarriage of
justice. It's understandable that he won't simply 'knuckle under' and
quietly serve his time. Because he is unrepentant and stands up for
his and
other prisoners rights the prison authorities view Mark as a
'subversive'
prisoner.

Changes (for the worst) were due to be introduced this week at HMP
Frankland. Prisoners there were to be locked in their cells an extra
11
hours per week. They would have to collect and eat meals in
'association
time', effectively cutting the time out of their cells by an extra 3
hours.  Also visits were to be reduced in duration. Mark and other
prisoners at
Frankland were already locked in their cells for all but 3 hours a day
and
recently the cells themselves have been kept extremely hot. Prisoners
are
only able to open the small cell window about an inch to let in fresh
air.
Basically, this extra 'lock up' time will make life even more
unbearable.

Right now we need people to phone and fax the Governor of HMP
Frankland
enquiring why Mark has been put in segregation. We need to make it
clear to
the prison authorities that Mark has a lot of supporters, concerned
with
his well being, who are monitoring the situation. Prior to being moved
to
Frankland, Mark was attacked and beaten by screws and regularly moved
from
prison to prison. We need to make it clear to the prison authorities
that
this kind of harassment is totally unacceptable. Your support as
always is
appreciated.

PICKET PAUL BOATENG - MINISTER FOR PRISONS
The Justice for Mark Barnsley campaign will also be holding an
information
picket to publicise Mark's case at the Surgery of Home Office Minister
Paul
Boateng. We will raise with Boateng the delay in allocation of a CCRC
case
worker to Mark's case and the non-disclosure of evidence by Sheffield
CPS
as well as Mark's current segregation at HMP Frankland. All supporters
in the
London area are encouraged to come along to help make the day a
success.

So, there you are.  Make what you like of it.

My own personal belief is that this is a separate thing from his
original "offence" - as legal people put it - but it's certain that
'fermenting dissent' whilst in prison isn't going to help anyone.

Perhaps RMS didn't grasp the full meaning of the stuff he read about
Mr Barnsley ??  Reason I sent this in is because the original thing he
was arrested for was also something to do with computers.  Think it
was MS Windows ?
