 I think this was one of the earlier problems I had with kernels. 
The usual kernel rpm is just a bloated non-standard pile of headaches. I
don't seem to recall ever attempting installing and compiling a RedHat
kernel SRPM - I think at this point I decided to just go vanilla.

 What is this "/usr/src/linux" madness that you mention? I've not really
looked at the Debian disks I've got, and RedHat is really the only
distro I've played with. About the only thing I've noticed is a
pointless /usr/src/redhat directory, which seems to serve to particular
purpose.

 Red Hat seem to be famous for making stupid decisions over the years...
