[Sheflug] additional keys?

hi all

i've spent the last 18months running linux and havn't used the 'extra' keys 
on the keyboard (internet stuff and volume controls etc... (compac presario))

i recently tried to map the keys but they do not respond to the key mapping 
utility - no response!
i do get an output if i use the additional keys along with the 'ctrl' key.
under "windows" an additional app runs in the background to monitor these 
keys.

is it possible to map these to applications under linux and if so how?
