We use rsync for backups from all our machines to a 1 Terabyte nas (soon to
be a 4T nas) all machines running linux and have had no problems.
Its done over secure shell with something like this
rsync -e ssh -v --delete -ogxrlptz --numeric-ids remote:/dir /localdir/
