Don't forget it's Perl GUI based.  Which I think is Gtk+ or something 
like that.  So, in some ways script based is correct.  

You can also manually use Layers but I don't bother too much with 
that.  It's time consuming.  Or, can be if you slip up somewhere.  
The GIMP manual may or may not be a good read...
