So you can actually /play/ files OK, you just can't hear them?
If this is the case, run "aplay -l" and post the output.

Do you have an internal modem by any chance? What I've had recently is my 
modem being detected as mixer and set as the primary audio device, so all 
sound was going to the wrong hardware...
