Not yet as far as I have heard, at least not on the desktop, despite my
efforts. However I've got plans! Several schools have gone over to Linux
on the server through a Sheffield City Centre based company who seem to be
making good progress in converting both schools and businesses over to a
more appropriate "complete solution" server OS.
My question would be "Is it not better to introduce Linux to the desktop
through thin client rather than dual boot?" That way you don't have to mess
with the client PC (other than creating a boot disk/ network boot loader)
and it doesn't matter how old the PC is performance wise if its just being a
thin client. Once people have got used to Linux then maybe switch those
with specific needs over to a fat Linux desktop. One of the big differences
between Linux and Widnow$ XP is boot time. And this is the users first
impression. Using thin clients reduces the boot time to something much more
acceptable. As desktop services through Linux are still developing
centralising it all through thin clients also seems to be a better way of
drip feeding changes without trawling round the whole network applying
patches.
Not sure if the gnome "no lock down" issue still exists in the world of thin
client.
Anybody got any comments?
