The mail doesn't go your home directory it goes to /var/spool/mail/user_name.
Note that the above also assumes that your username locally is the same as on
the pop server. If it isn't you want something like this:

user "kppp-archive.freeserve.co.uk" there with password "easy_guess" is martin
here
