I got XFree86 4.0 running with no particular pain on the
problematic laptop I mentioned to some of you, which is running
Debian frozen (potato) with a 2.3.99-pre5 kernel.  (Actually, I
think it was 2.3.99-pre3 at the time I did this.)  It detected
the video card chipset and the monitor, though I had to set
vertical and horizontal sync rates manually, since it used a
tiny default range.  It came up with a beautiful configuration,
far better than anything I could do by hand, since this (borrowed)
laptop has no information with it, and even the 4.0 SuperProbe
didn't find out much about the graphics card.  But the XF86Setup
did.  I got a nice display with 256 colours, and Netscape 4.72,
as well as everything from XFree86 4.0 that I tested, all worked
perfectly.  Unfortunately for some reason 4.0 rejected the
Star Office fonts, and Star Office was the whole reason for
borrowing a laptop.

All was not lost.  I was able to take the information XF86Setup
gave me from 4.0 and reapply it in 3.3.6.  Result:  a perfect
display (for me) that works with Netscape and Star Office.
