Since sending me last message I have recieved yours.

Thanks for the advice.

There was a ttyS0 lock file in /var/lock, which I deleted. There was also a
ttyS1 lock file which I haven't deleted.

Unfortunately, running the program immediately afterwards, gave the same
process error message and wouldn't run. A new S0 lock file was in the folder.

It must be something else which is causing it. Non of my Linux problems are
ever straightforward.
