Further to what paul has already said:

I have a TNT2 MX, which is  a nasty budget, low memory bus width, 'orrible thing. I wouldn't have bought it had I known. Anyway, I have suffered lockups like that which Paul described using the free glx drivers.

Also, as I said in a previous post, only Quake3 works. Anything else has to be software rendered or it dies a horrible (but quite spectacular) death at the hands of GLX.

Looks like ATI Radeon or similar will be my next experime.. erm, graphics card.
