This is one of the many reasons why vendors prefer plastic.

Or Japan, where getting out of a DD agreement requires signature of
the creditor or a full-blown (UKP10,000 or more in legal costs) court
injunction -- even if said creditor just flew the coop hours ahead of
a fraud want from Interpol....

In the U.S., though, most banks now offer DD via the VISA/MC payment
system.  Best of both worlds.
