No. I said big downloads. Like checking out the XFree CVS tree.
A kernel only takes an hour and a bit to d/l. KDE is broken down into
packages. I've downloaded both with a 2 hour cut off. (Also if you use the
connection over midnight the cut off seems to fail :)

Not necessarily, there are a few Winmodem drivers around
(www.linmodems.org?).
