Look no further than Qt & KDE. It may *look* daunting, but I promise it's
not (there's loads of good guides around), it's 'proper' C++, and it's good
code.

KDE/Qt documentation is also pretty second-to-none. I recommend starting
with Qt (you'll probably find you have all the Qt docs in your man pages),
just starting with stuff like QString, etc.
