How come you were booting / and not /boot? Do you mean mounting? Have
you tried the funky mount notail options *before* installing lilo?
Other way to do it is to use an initrd.

Does lilo do devices other than hda? I seem to recall having problems.
Might be worth trying grub - I use it, it rocks ;) The way I got lilo to
work was to swap the drives, lilo /dev/hda, and then swap them back.
/etc/fstab needed cuddling along, but it worked...
