If I do that with KDE 2.1 beta 1 I find that it goes back to the black
screen but there's lots of error messages that say that Gtk+ and KDE
apps have crashed.

I have to do 'startx' to re-start X-windows.

As an alternative at the bottom LHS side of the screen in the KDE 2
terminal window you can click on 'new' and a new terminal window
starts alongside the one that's already going.  That means that you
can run multiple consoles next to each other without leaving KDE 2.

I can imagine that some people might like that and other's don't.
Plenty of other window managers out there :)
