OK - here's the system as it stands:

 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  4.98 seconds = 12.85 MB/sec

Both drives are set as follows:

[root@flux /root]# hdparm -u1 -d1X66 -c3 -k1 /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
 setting 32-bit I/O support flag to 3
 setting unmaskirq to 1 (on)
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 setting keep_settings to 1 (on)
 setting xfermode to 66 (UltraDMA mode2)
 I/O support  =  3 (32-bit w/sync)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  1 (on)

I'm just about to power down and swap a few cables about....
